Recently a favorite customer brought a favorite piece of art. She remembered it from her childhood home and recently sought to move it into a prominent place in her own home. The oil on paper had been matted in a large orange mat (to match the orange in the painting) with a drab silver/green bottom mat (which happened to be the color scheme of the new room.) We simply “swapped” the mats, in a sense. We made the strong orange mat the accent mat (and only showing a crisp 1/8″, such a strong color anyway) and used the silver/green as the main top mat (although we did upgrade to a genuine silk mat instead of a paper mat.) The orange is still allowed to be the star color, bright as it is it will be the first thing noticed. The silver/green is a supporting, grounding component. Now! If we could just get her to change that frame!
